Amoxicillin 250 mg / 500 mg
Amoxicillin is a penicillin antibiotic taken by mouth. It is prescribed for bacterial infections in parts of the body where the bacteria causing them are known to respond, and it is also used as part of a combination to treat Helicobacter pylori. It does nothing against viruses such as colds or flu, and it is available only on a valid prescription.
This medicine is dispensed only against a valid prescription. Don’t have one? Order anyway — one of our doctors will call you for a free consultation after you order, and the medicine ships only if it is prescribed for you.
A licensed pharmacist reviews every prescription before this medicine is dispensed.

Medicine information
Amoxicillin uses
Amoxicillin is authorised for infections caused by bacteria that are susceptible to it. Your prescriber decides whether your infection is one of them.
- Infections of the ear, nose and throat, including some cases of tonsillitis and middle-ear infection.
- Lower respiratory tract infections, such as some cases of bronchitis and pneumonia.
- Urinary and genital tract infections.
- Skin and skin structure infections.
- Helicobacter pylori infection with duodenal ulcer disease in adults, given in combination with other medicines.
Your prescriber may use amoxicillin for other infections, including dental infections and infection prevention before some procedures. Follow their instructions, not this page.
How to use amoxicillin
Take amoxicillin exactly as prescribed, and finish the whole course even if you feel better after a few days. Stopping early lets the infection come back and encourages resistant bacteria.
- Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. Do not open or chew it.
- You can take amoxicillin with or without food. Taking it at the start of a meal can reduce stomach upset.
- Space the doses evenly through the day so the level in your body stays steady — every 8 hours or every 12 hours, as your prescriber directs.
- The label gives usual adult doses of 250 mg every 8 hours or 500 mg every 12 hours for milder infections, and 500 mg every 8 hours or 875 mg every 12 hours for more severe ones. Your prescriber sets yours.
- Keep taking it for at least 48 to 72 hours after your symptoms settle, and for at least 10 days if you are being treated for a streptococcal throat infection.
- Do not save leftover capsules for the next illness, and never take someone else's course.
- Tell your prescriber if you are no better after two or three days, or if you get worse at any point.
If you miss a dose
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, then carry on as normal. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — do not take two at once to catch up.
Storage
Keep the capsules in their original container, tightly closed, at room temperature (below 25 °C) and away from damp and heat. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
Amoxicillin side effects
Most people finish a course of amoxicillin without difficulty. Tell your prescriber or pharmacist about anything that bothers you, and about any rash straight away.
Common
Serious — seek urgent care
- Anaphylaxis or severe allergic reaction — swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, sudden widespread hives, faintness. Call emergency services.
- Severe skin reaction — blistering, peeling skin, mouth sores, a rash that spreads with fever (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, DRESS, AGEP). Stop and seek urgent care.
- Severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea with abdominal cramps, during treatment or up to two months after it — this can be Clostridioides difficile colitis. Seek urgent care and do not take an anti-diarrhoeal on your own.
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine or pain under the right ribs — possible liver injury. Seek urgent care.
- A large drop in the amount you pass urine, blood in the urine, or swelling — possible kidney reaction. Seek urgent care.
- Unusual bruising, bleeding, sore throat with fever, or extreme paleness and breathlessness — possible blood disorder. Seek urgent care.
Warnings
- Do not take amoxicillin if you have ever had a serious reaction such as anaphylaxis or Stevens-Johnson syndrome to amoxicillin, another penicillin, or a cephalosporin. Tell your prescriber and our pharmacist about any penicillin allergy before you order.
- Tell your prescriber if you have had any allergic condition, including asthma, hay fever or hives — serious reactions to penicillins are more likely in people with a history of allergy.
- Amoxicillin is usually avoided in infectious mononucleosis (glandular fever), because it commonly causes a rash in that setting.
- Interaction: amoxicillin can reduce the reliability of hormonal contraception. Use an additional non-hormonal method during the course and for a short period afterwards, as your prescriber or pharmacist advises.
- Interaction: taking allopurinol at the same time increases the chance of a rash. Probenecid raises amoxicillin levels. Amoxicillin may increase the effect of warfarin, and may raise methotrexate levels.
- Tell your prescriber if you have kidney problems — the dose usually needs reducing.
- Tell your prescriber if you are pregnant or breastfeeding so they can weigh it up. Amoxicillin passes into breast milk.
- Amoxicillin does not work against viruses. Taking an antibiotic you do not need still exposes you to its side effects and adds to antibiotic resistance.
Amoxicillin FAQs
How long does amoxicillin take to work?
Many people feel better within 48 to 72 hours, though it depends on the infection and how unwell you were to begin with. Feeling better is not the same as being cured. The label asks you to continue for at least 48 to 72 hours after symptoms settle, and for a full 10 days if you are being treated for a streptococcal throat infection, because stopping early lets survivors regrow. If you are no better after two or three days, or if you get worse at any point, contact your prescriber rather than waiting out the course.
Can I drink alcohol while taking amoxicillin?
There is no direct interaction between alcohol and amoxicillin of the kind that exists with metronidazole. That said, alcohol can worsen the nausea, stomach upset and tiredness you may already have from the infection or the antibiotic, and being unwell is a poor time to drink heavily. It also does not help you sleep or recover. If you have liver problems or take other medicines, ask your prescriber or our pharmacist about your own situation rather than relying on a general answer.
Does amoxicillin affect birth control?
The amoxicillin label lists a possible reduction in the effectiveness of oral contraceptives, and this is one of the interactions patients most often ask about. The evidence for broad-spectrum antibiotics is mixed and the effect is probably small for most people, but vomiting and diarrhoea during an infection are themselves reliable ways to lose contraceptive cover. The practical advice is to use an additional non-hormonal method during the course and for a short period afterwards, and to ask our pharmacist or your prescriber how long that should be in your case.
What should I do if I am allergic to penicillin?
Tell your prescriber and our pharmacist before ordering. Amoxicillin is a penicillin, and a history of a serious reaction such as anaphylaxis or Stevens-Johnson syndrome to any penicillin or cephalosporin is a contraindication — we will not dispense it. Many people who believe they are penicillin-allergic turn out not to be when properly assessed, and a formal allergy review can widen your options, but that assessment belongs with your prescriber or an allergy service. In the meantime, treat the label on your record as accurate and do not test it yourself.
Can I buy amoxicillin online without a prescription?
No. Amoxicillin is a prescription-only medicine and we dispense it only against a valid prescription from your licensed prescriber. That matters more with antibiotics than almost anything else: the wrong antibiotic for the wrong bug does not treat you, it exposes you to allergy and to C. difficile, and it adds to resistance that affects everyone. A licensed pharmacist reviews every order here, checks it against your other medicines and your allergy history, and will contact your prescriber if something needs clarifying.
What strengths and pack sizes do you dispense, and what does it cost?
We dispense amoxicillin as 250 mg (15 tabs) and 500 mg (15 tabs). The current price for each pack is shown on this page and again in your cart before you pay, with no membership fee and no tiers. Stock may be branded or generic on any given day, depending on what is in supply; the active ingredient, the strength and the pack size are what the label says either way. What we dispense is set by your prescription rather than by what you select, so if the quantity on your prescription differs from the pack you picked, our pharmacist will contact you before anything is sent.
Where do you ship amoxicillin, and how quickly?
We dispense only where we are licensed to dispense. The checkout tells you whether we can ship to your address before you take payment further, and if we cannot, you will not be charged. Delivery timing depends on your address and on how quickly your prescription can be verified. For an acute infection, ask your prescriber whether waiting for delivery is appropriate at all — sometimes starting the same day from a local pharmacy is the right call, and we would rather tell you that than take the order.
Is it safe to take amoxicillin during pregnancy?
That is a decision for your prescriber, who knows your history and the infection being treated. Amoxicillin is among the antibiotics commonly used in pregnancy and it has been in wide use for decades, but no medicine in pregnancy is a routine decision, and the label asks that it be given only when clearly needed. It also passes into breast milk in small amounts, which can occasionally cause a rash or loose stools in the baby. Tell your prescriber and our pharmacist if you are pregnant, might be, or are breastfeeding.
