Sildenafil 25 mg to 250 mg tablets, chewables and capsules
Sildenafil is a PDE5 inhibitor taken by mouth as a tablet. It is prescribed for erectile dysfunction in adult men, and it works only alongside sexual stimulation — it does not cause an erection on its own. It must never be combined with nitrate medicines, and it is available only on a valid prescription.
This medicine is dispensed only against a valid prescription. Don’t have one? Order anyway — one of our doctors will call you for a free consultation after you order, and the medicine ships only if it is prescribed for you.

Medicine information
Sildenafil uses
The 50 mg and 100 mg tablets are authorised for one use in adult men. Sildenafil at other strengths is used for a different condition and is not what is dispensed here.
- Erectile dysfunction in adult men — difficulty getting or keeping an erection sufficient for sexual activity.
Sildenafil at a lower strength is authorised for pulmonary arterial hypertension under a separate product. Your prescriber may use sildenafil for other conditions; follow their instructions, not this page.
How to use sildenafil
Take sildenafil exactly as prescribed. It is taken when you need it rather than every day, and it only works if you are sexually aroused.
- Swallow the tablet whole with water, about one hour before sexual activity. It can be taken anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours beforehand.
- The label gives a usual starting dose of 50 mg, adjustable to 25 mg or 100 mg depending on how you respond and tolerate it. Your prescriber sets yours.
- Take it no more than once in any 24 hours. Do not take a second tablet on the same day because the first did not seem to work.
- A heavy or high-fat meal delays how quickly it starts working by around an hour. Taking it on an emptier stomach gives a more predictable onset.
- Sexual stimulation is required. Nothing happens without it.
- Limit alcohol. It can worsen erectile difficulty and add to the drop in blood pressure sildenafil causes.
- Do not combine sildenafil with tadalafil, vardenafil, any other PDE5 inhibitor, or any other treatment for erectile dysfunction unless your prescriber has told you to.
- If it has not worked on several separate occasions, go back to your prescriber rather than raising the dose yourself.
If you miss a dose
Sildenafil is taken as needed, so there is no dosing schedule to miss and nothing to make up. Simply take it before the next occasion, keeping to one dose in 24 hours.
Storage
Keep the tablets in their original container, below 25 °C, dry and away from heat and light. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
Sildenafil side effects
Most side effects are short-lived and come from the way sildenafil relaxes blood vessels. Tell your prescriber or pharmacist if any of them are troublesome.
Common
Serious — seek urgent care
- An erection lasting longer than 4 hours, or a painful erection. Seek urgent medical care — untreated priapism can permanently damage the penis.
- Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes. Stop sildenafil and seek urgent care; this can be non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy.
- Sudden loss or reduction of hearing, sometimes with ringing in the ears or dizziness. Stop sildenafil and seek urgent care.
- Chest pain, severe dizziness, fainting or nausea during sexual activity. Stop, do not take a nitrate, and seek emergency care — tell the medical team you have taken sildenafil.
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing. Call emergency services.
- Seizure, or a rash with blistering or peeling skin.
Warnings
- Never take sildenafil with nitrate medicines in any form — including glyceryl trinitrate, isosorbide mononitrate or dinitrate, nitroglycerin sprays and patches, and recreational nitrites known as poppers. The combination can cause a sudden, dangerous fall in blood pressure.
- Do not take sildenafil with riociguat, a guanylate cyclase stimulator used for pulmonary hypertension.
- Do not take sildenafil if you have had an allergic reaction to it before.
- Sexual activity itself carries cardiac risk. Tell your prescriber if you have heart disease, have had a heart attack or stroke, have uncontrolled blood pressure high or low, unstable angina, or serious irregular heart rhythms — sexual activity may be inadvisable for you.
- Interaction: alpha-blockers used for prostate or blood pressure problems, and other blood pressure medicines, add to the drop in blood pressure. Your prescriber may stagger the timing or start you at a lower dose.
- Interaction: strong CYP3A4 inhibitors such as ritonavir, ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin and erythromycin raise sildenafil levels. Grapefruit juice can too. Your dose may need reducing.
- Tell your prescriber if you have liver or kidney problems, a bleeding disorder or active stomach ulcer, sickle cell disease, leukaemia, myeloma, retinitis pigmentosa, a deformity of the penis, or if you have had NAION before.
- Sildenafil offers no protection against HIV or any other sexually transmitted infection.
- Sildenafil is not for use by women or by anyone under 18.
Sildenafil FAQs
How long does sildenafil take to work?
Usually about 30 to 60 minutes, which is why the label suggests taking it around an hour before sexual activity. A large or fatty meal slows absorption and can push that back by roughly an hour, so an emptier stomach gives a more predictable start. The effect is generally there for about four hours, though that varies between people. Sexual stimulation is still required — the tablet does not produce an erection by itself. If nothing happens after several separate attempts, speak to your prescriber rather than adding a second tablet.
How is sildenafil different from tadalafil?
Both are PDE5 inhibitors and both need sexual stimulation to work. The practical difference is timing. Sildenafil is usually taken around an hour beforehand and its effect lasts roughly four hours, and food delays its onset. Tadalafil works for up to 36 hours from a single dose, is not affected by food, and also comes in a low daily dose. Neither is better than the other in the abstract — the fit depends on your health, your other medicines and how you would rather use it, which is a conversation for your prescriber.
Can I drink alcohol with sildenafil?
A small amount is unlikely to cause a problem for most people, but alcohol works against you here in two ways. It is itself a common cause of difficulty getting an erection, so it can make the tablet look like it failed. It also lowers blood pressure, adding to the same effect from sildenafil, which can leave you dizzy or faint. Heavy drinking makes both worse. If you take blood pressure medicines or an alpha-blocker as well, ask your prescriber or our pharmacist about your own situation.
Why can't I take sildenafil with nitrates?
Because the combination can drop your blood pressure far and fast. Nitrates and sildenafil both act on the same pathway that relaxes blood vessels, and together the effect is multiplied — the result can be collapse, a heart attack or a stroke. This is an absolute contraindication on the label, not a caution. It covers prescribed nitrates for angina in every form, and recreational nitrites known as poppers. If you develop chest pain after taking sildenafil, tell the emergency team you have taken it, because it changes what they can give you.
Can I buy sildenafil online without a prescription?
No. Sildenafil is a prescription-only medicine and we dispense it only against a valid prescription from your licensed prescriber. There are good reasons for that: sildenafil is absolutely contraindicated with nitrates, interacts with alpha-blockers and several common antibiotics and antifungals, and erectile dysfunction is sometimes the first visible sign of heart disease or diabetes that needs investigating. A licensed pharmacist reviews every order here and will contact you or your prescriber if anything needs clarifying.
What strengths and pack sizes do you dispense, and what does it cost?
We dispense sildenafil as 25 mg (10 tabs), 50 mg (10 tabs), 100 mg (10 tabs), 100 mg (4 tabs), 120 mg (5 tabs), 150 mg (10 tabs), 200 mg (10 tabs), 250 mg (10 tabs), 100 mg chewable (10 tabs), 100 mg chewable (4 tabs), 100 mg sublingual (10 tabs) and 100 mg soft gel (10 capsules). The current price for each pack is shown on this page and again in your cart before you pay, with no membership fee and no tiers. Stock may be branded or generic on any given day, depending on what is in supply; the active ingredient, the strength and the pack size are what the label says either way. What we dispense is set by your prescription rather than by what you select, so if the quantity on your prescription differs from the pack you picked, our pharmacist will contact you before anything is sent.
Where do you ship sildenafil, and is the packaging discreet?
We dispense only where we are licensed to dispense, and the checkout tells you whether we can ship to your address before you pay. If we cannot, you will not be charged. Orders go out in plain outer packaging with no indication of the contents, and the pharmacy name appears only where the law requires it on the dispensing label inside. Delivery timing depends on your address and on how quickly your prescription can be verified. Current carriers and windows are on our shipping page.
Is sildenafil safe if I have heart problems?
That is a judgement only your prescriber can make. The relevant point on the label is that sexual activity itself puts strain on the heart, so treatments for erectile dysfunction should not be used by men for whom sexual activity is inadvisable. Sildenafil is contraindicated with nitrates, which many people with angina take, and it adds to the effect of blood pressure medicines. Tell your prescriber about any heart attack, stroke, angina, heart rhythm problem or blood pressure treatment, and give our pharmacist your full medicine list.
