Modafinil 100 mg / 200 mg tablets
Modafinil is a wakefulness-promoting medicine taken by mouth. It is prescribed for adults whose excessive sleepiness comes from narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnoea or shift work disorder. It treats the sleepiness, not the condition underneath it, and it is available only on a valid prescription.
This medicine is dispensed only against a valid prescription. Don’t have one? Order anyway — one of our doctors will call you for a free consultation after you order, and the medicine ships only if it is prescribed for you.
A licensed pharmacist reviews every prescription before this medicine is dispensed.

Medicine information
Modafinil uses
Modafinil is authorised for the symptomatic treatment of excessive sleepiness in adults. These are the uses listed on the product label.
- Excessive daytime sleepiness in adults with narcolepsy. Modafinil has no meaningful effect on cataplexy.
- Excessive sleepiness in adults with obstructive sleep apnoea, used alongside treatment of the obstruction itself. If CPAP is your treatment, keep using it — modafinil is added when sleepiness persists despite it.
- Excessive sleepiness in adults with circadian rhythm sleep disorder, shift work type (shift work disorder).
Your prescriber may use modafinil for other conditions. Follow their instructions, not this page.
How to use modafinil
Take modafinil exactly as your prescriber wrote it. The dose and the time of day both matter, because a dose taken too late can keep you awake at night.
- Swallow the tablet whole with water. You can take it with or without food; food may slow how quickly it takes effect but does not change how much is absorbed.
- For narcolepsy, the label gives a usual adult range of 200 to 400 mg a day, often split between a morning and a midday dose. Your prescriber sets yours.
- For obstructive sleep apnoea, the label gives 200 mg as a single morning dose.
- For shift work disorder, the label gives 200 mg taken about one hour before the shift starts.
- Avoid taking a dose in the late afternoon or evening — it can stop you falling asleep at your usual bedtime.
- Do not increase the dose or take it more often than prescribed. Single doses above 300 mg and total daily doses above 400 mg are not recommended.
- Modafinil does not replace sleep. Keep your usual sleep schedule and any CPAP treatment going.
- Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how modafinil affects you. It may not fully remove your sleepiness.
If you miss a dose
If you miss a dose you can take it when you remember, unless it is close to the time of your next dose. Skip it if it is late in the day, and never take two doses together to catch up.
Storage
Keep the tablets in their original container, tightly closed, below 25 °C and away from damp, heat and light. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
Modafinil side effects
Most people tolerate modafinil, but tell your prescriber or pharmacist about anything that bothers you or does not go away.
Common
Serious — seek urgent care
- Serious skin reaction, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis — stop taking modafinil and seek urgent care at the first sign of any rash, blistering, peeling skin or mouth sores.
- Multi-organ hypersensitivity (DRESS) — rash with fever, swollen glands, or feeling generally very unwell needs urgent medical assessment.
- Angioedema or anaphylaxis — swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing or swallowing, is a medical emergency.
- New or worsening psychiatric symptoms — mania, hallucinations, delusions, agitation, severe depression or thoughts of self-harm. Seek urgent help.
- Chest pain, a fast or irregular heartbeat, or breathlessness — seek urgent care.
Warnings
- Do not use modafinil if you have ever had an allergic reaction or serious rash from modafinil or armodafinil.
- Modafinil can be habit-forming. It is a Schedule IV controlled substance in the United States, and both the Canadian and US labels warn about misuse and dependence. Do not increase your own dose, and tell your prescriber if you have a history of drug, stimulant or alcohol misuse.
- Interaction: modafinil makes hormonal contraception less reliable. Use an additional or alternative non-hormonal method while taking it and for one month after you stop.
- Interaction: modafinil affects liver enzymes and can change the levels of other medicines, including ciclosporin, warfarin, phenytoin, midazolam and triazolam. Give your pharmacist your full medicine list.
- Tell your prescriber if you have heart disease, mitral valve prolapse, left ventricular hypertrophy, high blood pressure, liver or kidney problems, or a history of psychosis, depression, bipolar disorder or an eating disorder.
- Avoid alcohol while taking modafinil. Alcohol has not been studied with it, and modafinil can mask how impaired you actually are.
- Tell your prescriber if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding. Cases of major congenital malformations and intrauterine growth restriction have been reported with modafinil and armodafinil.
- Stop and contact your prescriber if a rash appears at any point in treatment, even months in.
Modafinil FAQs
How long does modafinil last?
Modafinil has an elimination half-life of roughly 15 hours, so a morning dose is often still active late in the evening. That is why the label puts narcolepsy doses in the morning and at midday, and asks you to avoid late-afternoon or evening doses — otherwise it can stop you sleeping at night. How long you personally notice an effect varies with your dose, your liver function and your age. Older adults clear it more slowly and are often started lower. If it wears off too early or lasts too long for your schedule, tell your prescriber rather than adjusting the timing yourself.
Can you drink alcohol with modafinil?
The label advises avoiding alcohol. The combination has not been studied properly, so no one can tell you a safe amount. The practical concern is that modafinil promotes wakefulness and can mask how intoxicated you actually feel, which makes it easy to drink more than you intended or to drive when you should not. Alcohol also worsens the sleep disruption that modafinil already causes. If you drink at all, discuss it with your prescriber or our pharmacist first, especially if you also take other medicines that act on the brain.
Is modafinil a controlled substance in Canada?
Modafinil is prescription-only in Canada but is not scheduled under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, so it is not handled as a narcotic there. In the United States it is a Schedule IV controlled substance. Either way, the Canadian product monograph still warns that modafinil has abuse potential and asks prescribers to watch for dose escalation and drug-seeking behaviour. Treat it as a medicine that needs a prescription and a prescriber who is following you, not something to share or stockpile.
Does modafinil stop hormonal birth control working?
Yes, this is one of the more important interactions. Modafinil induces the liver enzyme CYP3A4, which speeds up the breakdown of the hormones in combined pills, patches, rings, implants and some injections. The label tells patients to use an additional or alternative non-hormonal method of contraception while taking modafinil and for one month after the last dose, because the enzyme effect takes time to wear off. Tell your prescriber and our pharmacist if you use hormonal contraception so they can help you plan cover.
Can I buy modafinil online without a prescription?
No. Modafinil is a prescription-only medicine, and we will not dispense it without a valid prescription from your licensed prescriber. That is not a formality: modafinil interacts with hormonal contraception and several other medicines, carries a rare but serious rash risk, and is not appropriate for some heart and psychiatric conditions. A licensed pharmacist reviews every order here, checks it against the rest of your medicine list, and will call you or your prescriber if something needs clarifying. Sites that offer to skip the prescription are not operating lawfully.
What strengths and pack sizes do you dispense, and what does it cost?
We dispense modafinil as 100 mg (10 tabs) and 200 mg (10 tabs). The current price for each pack is shown on this page and again in your cart before you pay, with no membership fee and no tiers. Stock may be branded or generic on any given day, depending on what is in supply; the active ingredient, the strength and the pack size are what the label says either way. What we dispense is set by your prescription rather than by what you select, so if the quantity on your prescription differs from the pack you picked, our pharmacist will contact you before anything is sent.
Where do you ship modafinil, and how long does it take?
We dispense only where we are licensed to dispense. The checkout tells you whether we can ship to your address before you pay, and if we cannot, you will not be charged. Delivery timing depends on your address and on how quickly your prescription can be verified — if the pharmacist needs to contact your prescriber, that adds time. Nothing is shipped until the prescription is confirmed and reviewed. Our shipping page carries current timings and carriers.
Is modafinil safe to take long term?
We cannot tell you it is safe — that depends on you, and only your prescriber can judge it. What the label says is that effectiveness beyond about 9 weeks in narcolepsy and 12 weeks in sleep apnoea and shift work disorder has not been systematically studied, and that a prescriber who continues it for longer should re-assess you periodically. The main risks to watch for over time are the rare serious rash, psychiatric changes, and gradual dose escalation. Keep your review appointments and report any rash, mood change or chest symptoms straight away.
