Tadalafil 5 mg to 80 mg tablets, chewables and capsules
Tadalafil is a PDE5 inhibitor taken by mouth as a tablet. It is prescribed for erectile dysfunction, for the urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate, and for both together. It works alongside sexual stimulation rather than causing an erection on its own, must never be combined with nitrate medicines, and is available only on a valid prescription.
This medicine is dispensed only against a valid prescription. Don’t have one? Order anyway — one of our doctors will call you for a free consultation after you order, and the medicine ships only if it is prescribed for you.

Medicine information
Tadalafil uses
Tadalafil is authorised for three related uses in adult men. Which one applies to you, and which dosing pattern goes with it, is your prescriber's decision.
- Erectile dysfunction in adult men — difficulty getting or keeping an erection sufficient for sexual activity.
- The signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (an enlarged prostate), such as a weak stream, hesitancy and needing to pass urine often or urgently.
- Erectile dysfunction and benign prostatic hyperplasia together, in men who have both.
Tadalafil at a different strength is authorised for pulmonary arterial hypertension under a separate product. Your prescriber may use tadalafil for other conditions; follow their instructions, not this page.
How to use tadalafil
Tadalafil is used in one of two ways — as a tablet taken before sexual activity, or as a lower dose taken every day. Take whichever your prescriber wrote, and do not switch between them yourself.
- Swallow the tablet whole with water. Food makes no difference, so you can take it with or without a meal.
- As-needed use for erectile dysfunction: the label gives a starting dose of 10 mg before anticipated sexual activity, adjustable to 5 mg or 20 mg. Take no more than one dose in any 24 hours.
- Once-daily use for erectile dysfunction: the label gives 2.5 mg once daily, which may be increased to 5 mg. Take it at about the same time each day, regardless of when you expect sexual activity.
- For an enlarged prostate, with or without erectile dysfunction, the label gives 5 mg once daily at about the same time each day.
- A single as-needed dose can still be working up to 36 hours later. Bear that in mind before taking anything that interacts, and tell any doctor treating you in that window.
- Sexual stimulation is required for the erectile dysfunction uses. Nothing happens without it.
- Do not combine tadalafil with sildenafil, vardenafil, any other PDE5 inhibitor, or any other treatment for erectile dysfunction unless your prescriber has told you to.
- Keep alcohol modest. Around five units or more adds to the fall in blood pressure and can leave you dizzy or faint.
If you miss a dose
If you take tadalafil daily and miss a dose, take it when you remember unless your next one is nearly due, in which case skip it — never take two in a day. If you take it as needed, there is nothing to make up; just take it before the next occasion, keeping to one dose in 24 hours.
Storage
Keep the tablets in their original container, below 25 °C, dry and away from heat and light. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
Tadalafil side effects
Most side effects come from tadalafil relaxing blood vessels, and many settle with continued use. Tell your prescriber or pharmacist if any of them are troublesome.
Common
Serious — seek urgent care
- An erection lasting longer than 4 hours, or a painful erection. Seek urgent medical care — untreated priapism can permanently damage the penis.
- Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes. Stop tadalafil and seek urgent care; this can be non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy.
- Sudden loss or reduction of hearing, sometimes with ringing in the ears or dizziness. Stop tadalafil and seek urgent care.
- Chest pain, severe dizziness, fainting or nausea during sexual activity. Stop, do not take a nitrate, and seek emergency care — tell the medical team you have taken tadalafil.
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing. Call emergency services.
- Seizure, or a rash with blistering or peeling skin.
Warnings
- Never take tadalafil with nitrate medicines in any form — including glyceryl trinitrate, isosorbide mononitrate or dinitrate, nitroglycerin sprays and patches, and recreational nitrites known as poppers. The combination can cause a sudden, dangerous fall in blood pressure. Because tadalafil lasts up to 36 hours, that window is longer than with some other PDE5 inhibitors, and the label asks for at least 48 hours between a dose and any nitrate given in an emergency.
- Do not take tadalafil with riociguat, a guanylate cyclase stimulator used for pulmonary hypertension.
- Do not take tadalafil if you have had a serious allergic reaction to it before.
- Sexual activity itself carries cardiac risk. The label states that treatments for erectile dysfunction should not be used by men for whom sexual activity is inadvisable. Tell your prescriber about any heart attack, stroke, angina, heart failure, uncontrolled blood pressure or serious rhythm problem.
- Interaction: alpha-blockers for prostate or blood pressure problems, and other blood pressure medicines, add to the drop in blood pressure. Your prescriber may adjust timing or dose.
- Interaction: strong CYP3A4 inhibitors such as ritonavir, ketoconazole, itraconazole and clarithromycin raise tadalafil levels and the label caps the dose when they are used together. Grapefruit juice can have the same effect.
- Tell your prescriber if you have liver or kidney problems — the dose usually needs limiting.
- Tell your prescriber if you have retinitis pigmentosa, a deformity of the penis, sickle cell disease, leukaemia or myeloma, or if you have had NAION before.
- Tadalafil offers no protection against HIV or any other sexually transmitted infection.
- Tadalafil is not for use by women or by anyone under 18.
Tadalafil FAQs
How long does tadalafil last?
A single as-needed dose was shown in trials to improve erectile function compared with placebo for up to 36 hours, which is longer than the other PDE5 inhibitors and the reason for its nickname. That does not mean 36 hours of continuous effect — it means the window in which the tablet can still work is that long, given sexual stimulation. It also means interactions last that long: nitrates remain dangerous throughout, and the label asks for at least 48 hours between a tadalafil dose and any emergency nitrate.
Should I take tadalafil daily or only when needed?
Both patterns are on the label and both are legitimate; which suits you is a decision for your prescriber. As-needed dosing means a 10 mg tablet (adjustable to 5 or 20 mg) taken before anticipated sexual activity, no more than once in 24 hours. Daily dosing means a smaller tablet — 2.5 or 5 mg for erectile dysfunction, 5 mg where an enlarged prostate is also being treated — taken at about the same time each day. If you are being treated for prostate symptoms, daily dosing is what the label specifies.
Does food or alcohol affect tadalafil?
Food does not. You can take tadalafil with or without a meal, and unlike sildenafil a fatty meal does not delay its onset. Alcohol is a different matter: the label notes that substantial amounts, around five units or more, add to tadalafil's blood-pressure-lowering effect and can cause dizziness, a racing heartbeat, headache or fainting. Alcohol is also a common cause of erectile difficulty in its own right. If you take blood pressure medicines or an alpha-blocker, ask your prescriber how much is reasonable for you.
Can tadalafil be taken with alpha-blockers for an enlarged prostate?
Sometimes, with care, and only if your prescriber has planned it. Alpha-blockers such as tamsulosin, doxazosin and alfuzosin lower blood pressure, and so does tadalafil; together the fall can be enough to cause dizziness or fainting. The label asks that the alpha-blocker be on a stable dose first, and that tadalafil then be started at the lowest dose. Do not start, stop or change either one on your own, and give our pharmacist the full list of what you take so the check can be done properly.
Can I buy tadalafil online without a prescription?
No. Tadalafil is a prescription-only medicine and we dispense it only against a valid prescription from your licensed prescriber. It is absolutely contraindicated with nitrates, interacts with alpha-blockers and several common antibiotics and antifungals, and both erectile dysfunction and prostate symptoms can be early signs of something that needs investigating. A licensed pharmacist reviews every order here and will contact you or your prescriber if anything needs clarifying. Any site offering it without a prescription is not operating lawfully.
What strengths and pack sizes do you dispense, and what does it cost?
We dispense tadalafil as 5 mg (10 tabs), 10 mg (10 tabs), 20 mg (10 tabs), 40 mg (10 tabs), 60 mg (10 tabs), 80 mg (10 tabs), 20 mg chewable (10 tabs), 20 mg sublingual (10 tabs) and 20 mg soft gel (10 capsules). The current price for each pack is shown on this page and again in your cart before you pay, with no membership fee and no tiers. Stock may be branded or generic on any given day, depending on what is in supply; the active ingredient, the strength and the pack size are what the label says either way. What we dispense is set by your prescription rather than by what you select, so if the quantity on your prescription differs from the pack you picked, our pharmacist will contact you before anything is sent.
Where do you ship tadalafil, and is the packaging discreet?
We dispense only where we are licensed to dispense, and the checkout tells you whether we can ship to your address before you pay. If we cannot, you will not be charged. Orders go out in plain outer packaging that gives no indication of the contents; the pharmacy details appear only where the law requires them on the dispensing label inside. Delivery timing depends on your address and on how quickly the prescription can be verified. Current carriers and windows are on our shipping page.
What should I do if an erection lasts more than four hours?
Go to an emergency department. An erection lasting more than four hours, or any painful erection, is priapism, and it is treated as an emergency because prolonged priapism can permanently damage the tissue of the penis and cause lasting loss of function. Do not wait to see whether it resolves, and do not take another dose of anything. Tell the medical team exactly what you took and when. Men with sickle cell disease, myeloma, leukaemia or an anatomical deformity of the penis are at higher risk and should discuss this with their prescriber before starting.
