Zopiclone 7.5 mg / 10 mg tablets
Zopiclone is a prescription sleeping tablet for short-term treatment of insomnia in adults - trouble falling asleep, waking through the night, or waking too early, when it is severe enough to affect your daily life. It is intended for days to a few weeks, not for ongoing use, because tolerance and dependence develop with time. A valid prescription is required and a pharmacist reviews every order.
This medicine is dispensed only against a valid prescription. Don’t have one? Order anyway — one of our doctors will call you for a free consultation after you order, and the medicine ships only if it is prescribed for you.
A licensed pharmacist reviews every prescription before this medicine is dispensed.

Medicine information
Zopiclone uses
Zopiclone is licensed for short-term use only. This is the approved use, in plain words.
- Short-term treatment of insomnia in adults, including difficulty falling asleep, waking during the night, and waking too early, where the insomnia is severe, disabling or causing marked distress
Your prescriber may use it in other situations; follow their instructions. Zopiclone is not authorised in the United States, where a related medicine, eszopiclone, is used instead.
How to use zopiclone
Take zopiclone exactly as your prescriber directs, immediately before bed, and only when you can allow yourself a full night's sleep. Treatment is meant to be short.
- Swallow the tablet whole with a drink of water, just before you get into bed.
- Only take it when you can stay in bed for a full night - about 7 to 8 hours. Taking it when you have to be up sooner leaves you impaired.
- The Canadian product monograph recommends starting at 3.75 mg, increasing to 7.5 mg only if your prescriber judges it necessary. Do not exceed 7.5 mg. Older adults and people with liver or kidney problems are usually kept on the lower dose. Your prescriber sets yours.
- Zopiclone usually takes about an hour to work.
- Never take a second tablet in the same night, even if you wake up.
- Do not drink alcohol on any day you take zopiclone.
- Do not drive, cycle or operate machinery for at least 12 hours after taking it. Next-morning impairment is well documented, even when you feel awake.
- Treatment usually lasts a few days to two weeks, and rarely more than four weeks including the time spent reducing the dose.
- If you have taken it regularly, do not stop suddenly - your prescriber will reduce the dose gradually.
If you miss a dose
If you forget to take zopiclone before bed, skip that night's dose entirely and take the next one at your usual time. Never take it in the middle of the night, and never take two tablets to make up for a missed one.
Storage
Store below 25 degrees C in a dry place, in the original pack. Keep it out of the sight and reach of children.
Zopiclone side effects
Most people tolerate zopiclone at the doses used for short-term insomnia, and a bitter taste is the effect people notice most; tell your prescriber or our pharmacist about anything that troubles you.
Common
Serious — seek urgent care
- Difficulty breathing, or very slow or shallow breathing - call emergency services
- Sleepwalking or doing things while not fully awake - driving, eating, phoning or leaving the house - with no memory of it. Stop taking zopiclone and contact your prescriber urgently
- Hallucinations, delusions, marked confusion or agitation - seek urgent advice
- Low mood, depression, or thoughts of harming yourself - contact your prescriber or an emergency service the same day
- Memory gaps for events after taking the tablet (amnesia) - contact your prescriber
- A severe allergic reaction: swelling of the face, lips or throat, hives, or difficulty breathing - call emergency services
Warnings
- Zopiclone is a controlled or scheduled medicine in many countries. Tolerance, dependence and misuse can develop, and the risk rises with higher doses and longer treatment - which is why the label limits it to short-term use.
- Do not stop suddenly after regular use. Stopping abruptly can cause rebound insomnia and withdrawal symptoms including anxiety, agitation, tremor and sweating. Your prescriber will taper the dose.
- Do not drink alcohol while taking zopiclone. Alcohol deepens its effect and can cause breathing problems and difficulty waking, which can be fatal.
- Do not combine zopiclone with opioid painkillers, benzodiazepines, other sleeping tablets, sedating antihistamines, antipsychotics, gabapentin or pregabalin without your prescriber's knowledge - the combination can cause profound sedation and dangerously slow breathing.
- Some antibiotics, antifungals and HIV medicines raise zopiclone levels in the blood. Tell your prescriber and our pharmacist about everything you take, including anything bought without a prescription.
- Zopiclone is not suitable if you have sleep apnoea, severe breathing problems, myasthenia gravis, severe liver disease, or a history of dependence on alcohol, drugs or medicines, or if you have had a serious reaction to zopiclone before.
- Do not drive, cycle or use machinery for at least 12 hours after a dose. Driving while impaired is an offence in most places, whether or not the medicine was prescribed.
- Zopiclone is not usually used during pregnancy. It passes into breast milk in small amounts; do not share a bed or sofa with your baby after taking it, because of the risk of sudden infant death. Tell your prescriber if you are pregnant, might be, or are breastfeeding.
- Zopiclone is for adults. It is not licensed for anyone under 18.
- Older adults are more sensitive to zopiclone and more likely to fall, become confused, or be impaired the next day. Lower doses are usual.
Zopiclone FAQs
How long does zopiclone take to work?
Zopiclone usually takes about an hour to work, which is why the label says to take it immediately before getting into bed rather than earlier in the evening. Only take it when you can stay in bed for a full night, roughly 7 to 8 hours - taking it later than intended is the most common reason people feel dazed and impaired the following morning. If you wake in the night, do not take a second tablet. If it consistently fails to help you sleep, tell your prescriber rather than increasing the dose.
Can I drink alcohol while taking zopiclone?
No. Do not drink alcohol on any day you take zopiclone. Alcohol increases the sedative effect, and together they can make you sleep so deeply that you do not breathe properly and are very difficult to wake. That combination has caused deaths. The same warning applies to opioid painkillers, benzodiazepines, other sleeping tablets and sedating antihistamines. If you have been drinking, do not take your zopiclone that night - skip the dose and speak to your prescriber if this happens often.
Is zopiclone addictive, and how long can I take it?
Zopiclone carries a real risk of dependence, and that risk grows with the dose and with how long you take it. Health Canada's monograph says treatment should usually not exceed 7 to 10 consecutive days, and that use beyond 2 to 3 weeks calls for a full reassessment. The NHS puts the practical limit at four weeks, including the time spent reducing the dose. If you have taken it regularly, do not stop suddenly - stopping abruptly can bring on rebound insomnia and withdrawal. Ask your prescriber to plan the ending before you start.
Can I drive the morning after taking zopiclone?
Not for at least 12 hours after your dose, and possibly not at all - the advice depends on your dose and how you respond. Studies behind Health Canada's 2014 safety review found that healthy adults taking 7.5 mg at bedtime can still have reduced vehicle control the next morning, even when they feel alert. Feeling fine is not evidence that you are unimpaired. Driving while impaired is an offence in most jurisdictions regardless of a prescription. Ask your prescriber what applies to you before you plan any early morning driving.
How is zopiclone different from zolpidem?
Both are non-benzodiazepine sleeping tablets, often called Z-drugs, and both act on the same receptor system in the brain. They differ chemically, in licensed doses, and in how long they stay in the body, and zopiclone is the one commonly associated with a bitter or metallic taste. Both carry the same core cautions: short-term use only, no alcohol, next-day impairment, and dependence with longer use. Neither is a better choice in general - what suits you depends on your health, your other medicines and your prescriber's judgement.
Can I buy zopiclone without a prescription?
No. Zopiclone is a prescription-only medicine and is controlled in many countries, and we cannot dispense it without a valid prescription from your licensed prescriber. Anyone offering it without one is operating outside both the law and any safety check. The prescription requirement is what puts a clinician in the loop on dose, duration and interactions with sedating medicines. Send us a valid prescription and our pharmacist reviews it against everything else you take, and will contact you or your prescriber if anything needs clarifying.
What strengths and pack sizes do you dispense, and what does it cost?
We dispense zopiclone as 7.5 mg (14 tabs) and 10 mg (14 tabs). The current price for each pack is shown on this page and again in your cart before you pay, with no membership fee and no tiers. Stock may be branded or generic on any given day, depending on what is in supply; the active ingredient, the strength and the pack size are what the label says either way. What we dispense is set by your prescription rather than by what you select, so if the quantity on your prescription differs from the pack you picked, our pharmacist will contact you before anything is sent.
Where do you ship zopiclone?
We dispense only where we are licensed to, and the checkout tells you whether we can ship to your address before you pay. Sleeping tablets are controlled in many countries and cannot lawfully be posted across some borders at all, so the rules differ by destination. If we cannot dispense to your address, nothing is charged. If you are unsure, contact us before placing an order and we will tell you plainly whether your address falls inside our service area.
